Entering the old Medinas through its gigantic and elaborate doors whether you are in Fez or Meknes, the sights, smells and sounds will fire your senses as you step from new to old world. The Medina of Fez is a magnificent urban fabric that has remained remarkably homogenous and intact since its inception in the 9th Century and The University of Al-Karaouine is a stellar example of that, being the first university in the world and still in operations since 859 AD.
In a tiny busy alley, behind a large unassuming wooden door you will find Chez Allal L'Ancienne Maison, a 14th Century 3 floors Riad owned by Mr Allal Zerrouk, filled with astonishing treasures like you've never seen or perhaps imagined, in particular antique handmade Moorish ceramics and hand-engraved brass and silver.
Handed down from father to son, damascene skills and craftsmanship consist of intricate engravings with silver/gold inlay on metal, steel in particular, creating fine patterns and Arabesques. The damascene workmanship reached its peak during the Moorish ruling of Andalusia and the Iberian Peninsula.
The Essaidi family continues to keep this historic heritage alive and thriving in the Kingdom of Morocco and lead the way for generations to come, as evident by the family's awards and recognition worldwide.
The Moroccan Room & Palais Damasquini work closely together to create amazing designs and inspirations, but most importantly to preserve the trade and know-how by providing a support network for local artisans and apprentices.
